Covenant University Hosts Maiden Edition of Mathematics Competition

Iganmode Grammar School, Ota emerged winner of the maiden edition of the Covenant University Community Development Impact Initiative Committee’s (CU-CDIIC) Mathematics Clinic and Quiz Competition, with Mother’s Joy Model College, Ota and St. Michael High School, Ota coming second and third position respectively.
The event which took place on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at the African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) of the university attracted 24 secondary schools from Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, represented by the Head, Department of Mathematics, Dr. Timothy Anake, said Covenant University is exceling in scholarship and community development activities, through various avenues and the mathematics clinic is one of such ways of consolidating on the progress.
He told the gathering that it was important to understand that Mathematics has transformed from just numbers to formulas, and models that could be deployed to solve human related issues.
Professor Atayero stated that the clinic would empower participants and contestants to develop interest in mathematics which would enable them rise up to the challenge of a highly digitized world, and as a result contribute to national development.
A special guest at the event, Mrs. Gbemisola Orekoya of the Mathematics Association of Nigeria, Ota Chapter, commended the University for coming up with the initiative. According to her, “With more efforts and initiatives such as this, it will just be a matter of time before we start recording great feats in the area of science and technology, because these fields of human endeavour thrives on the strength of mathematics.”
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chairman, Covenant University Community Development Impact Initiative Committee, Dr. Michael Agarana, said the ultimate goal of the clinic was for participants and contestants to savour and enjoy mathematics, while attempting to reverse the over 10 years of poor performances in the subject at the secondary school level.
He said the University through CDIIC is geared towards helping those who are weak in mathematics and provide a platform for healthy competition from time to time for every participating student in subsequent editions of the clinic.
Other highlights of the clinic were presentations on ‘Building Interest in Mathematics and Teaching Method’ by Dr. Sheila Bishop and ‘Mathematics is Beautiful’ delivered by Dr. Alfred Owoloko, both of the Covenant University’s Department of Mathematics.

Covenant University Donates Borehole to Feru Village, Offers Free Health Services

It was a double celebration time for the indigenes and other residents of Feru Village, Iyesi, Ota in Ogun State on Saturday, April 29, 2017, when Covenant University commissioned a borehole it donated to the community and offered free health services to the people.
The people trooped out in their hundreds to receive the University officials and to witness the commissioning of the borehole, as well as to benefit from the free medical services organised to mark both the World Malaria Day and World Health Day.
While addressing the people just before the commissioning, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, represented by the immediate past Head, Department of Mathematics, Dr. Alfred Owoloko, noted that the University was just carrying out its social responsibility to impact its host community which is one of the three main reasons for the establishment of a university.
He urged the people to make good use of the project, noting that, “It is now your property, not Covenant University’s. I urge you to take good care of it so that when we come here again in 10 years from now, it will still be functioning.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Covenant University Community Development Impact Initiative Committee (CUCDIIC), the body through which the University impacts its host community, Dr. Michael Agarana, expressed delight that the project was completed within the time frame. He encouraged the people to develop a maintenance culture in order to enjoy the project for a long time.
Also in his remarks, the Chairman of Grace Land Estate Community Development Association, Prince Nathaniel Falola, appreciated the University for its good gesture towards the community. He seized the opportunity to request for good roads, equipping their primary health centre and powering the electricity transformer donated by the Living Faith Church Worldwide (LFCWW), the proprietor base of the University.
While appreciating Covenant University for taking care of one of the major challenges in the community, the Baale of Feru Village, Chief Morufu Agbalabe, also used the occasion to request for school infrastructure, noting the importance of education to a people.
The Covenant University Medical Officials later carried out free medical services ranging from malaria testing, eye testing and high blood pressure examination. They were also given free medications and eye glasses.
Other guests at the event included the Chairman, Covenant University Medical Board, Professor Amos Alao, a member of the Board, Dr. Olujide Adekeye, the Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Onuoha, the Provincial Pastor of LFCWW in the area, Pastor Arojo Adeyemi, other members of the CUCDIIC and Pastors from the Province.
