COVENANT UNIVERSITY MARKS WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY

Category : Uncategorized

Covenant University officials on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, took time out of their busy schedule to join the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Hypertension Day.
The officials of the Disease Prevention and Control Unit of the University Medical Centre and other staff of the University moved round the campus both on foot and bicycles to create awareness about the silent killer (Hypertension) as well as measured the blood pressure of the staff.
The World Hypertension Day (WHD) is an initiative of the World Hypertension League (WHL), an affiliate of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH). The WHD was first inaugurated in May 2005 and has become an annual event ever since.
The theme for this year’s WHD is, “Know Your Number,” with a goal of increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world.
According to WHL, awareness of hypertension is considered to be virtually important, due to the number of deaths linked with associated heart attacks, kidney disease and strokes. There is also a perceived lack of awareness about hypertension amongst the general public, which the WHL hopes to change.
Also on the awareness creation train were Professor Segun Ayejuyo of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Henry Boyo of the Department of Physics and staff of the University’ Directorate of Media and Corporate Affairs.
